Have France won a World Cup before?

France won their first and only World Cup in 1998 on home soil.

A brace from Zinedine Zidane helped the hosts to a 3-0 win against a Brazil team who had gone into the final as defending champions.

The future Real Madrid manager scored two headers in the first half, before Emmanuel Petit, then of Arsenal, notched a third in the 93rd minute.

The buildup of the match was dominated by the fitness of Ronaldo, who reportedly suffered a seizure the night before the game and was ruled out before dramatically being selected.

How did France get to the 2018 World Cup Final?

France's route to the final

  • France 2-1 Australia (Group)
  • France 1-0 Peru (Group)
  • France 0-0 Denmark (Group)
  • France 4-3 Argentina (Round of 16)
  • France 2-0 Uruguay (Quarter final)
  • France 1-0 Belgium (Semi final)

What is their history like since winning?

Since winning the World Cup in 1998, France haven't had much luck in the world's biggest competition - until now.

In 2002, they went out in the group stage after sensationally losing the opening match of the tournament to Senegal.

In 2006 they finished second, losing the final to Italy on penalties, with Zidane getting sent off for a headbutt on Marco Matterazzi and David Trezeguet missing the decisive penalty.

In 2010 they finished 29th overall after getting knocked out in the group stage and failing to win a single match.

In 2014 they reached the quarter-finals but lost 1-0 to eventual winners Germany.
