France vs Uruguay head to head record: Didier Deschamps looks to overturn Les Bleus’ horrendous World Cup record against La Celeste

France take on Uruguay in the World Cup quarter-final and must overturn an appalling record against the South Americans to progress

FRANCE take on Uruguay in the World Cup quarter-final and will feel the weight of history on their shoulders as they look to progress to the last four.

A repeat of Les Bleus' stunning 4-3 win over Argentina appears unlikely as they have yet to score against their next South American opponents since 1985.

What is France's World Cup record against Uruguay?

Most of France's worst World Cup campaigns have featured a match against Uruguay.

In 1966 they were beaten 2-1 with goals from Pedro Rocha and Julio Cesar Cortes as La Celeste progressed through England's group in second place.

The French finished bottom of the group on one point.

The next time the two teams would meet would be in 2002 with the French looking to defend their title, but the Uruguayans held them to a dour 0-0 draw in South Korea.

That result helped neither side as Uruguay finished third on two points and France came bottom on one point.

And history repeated itself in 2010 as France drew their opening match 0-0 with Uruguay in what was viewed as one of the worst French performances in living memory.

But this time Uruguay progressed all the way to the semi final while France (you've guessed it!) finished bottom of their group on one point.

Have France ever beaten Uruguay?

France have just one win over Uruguay, which came in the 1985 Inter-Continental Championship.

Dominique Rocheteau and Jose Toure netted in a 2-0 win at the Parc des Princes.

The two sides have played three other matches, with friendlies ending 0-0 in 2008 and 2012 and the Uruguayans winning 1-0 in Montevideo in 2013 thanks to a Luis Suarez goal.
