Ikea offers combo 2 for 1 meal to celebrate England and Sweden’s World Cup quarter-final showdown
IKEA is dishing out a 2-for-1 meatballs and fish & chips combo meal for England's historic World Cup clash with Sweden tomorrow.
The flat pack giant will serve the "plate of two halves" across the UK as a gesture of goodwill before Sweden try to stop the rampant Three Lions making it to the semis.
Known for offering up Swedish fare like pork meatballs at its cafes, Ikea says it wants to football fans to have a taste of England too so they "don’t have to pick a side when it comes to their taste buds."
The deal, from 11am tomorrow, allows visitors to combine the meatball dish with traditional English fish & chips for the price of one meal.
And on Sunday a "Lunch of Champions" offer will see the winning side's dish served up at a discounted price of just £1.
Joakim Haby, from Ikea UK & Ireland, said: “We are very proud that our two home nations are in the quarter finals this weekend but have been finding it hard to choose between them."
He added: "To make sure our customers don’t have to pick a side and to celebrate the match, we’ve combined the two most iconic meals from each country into one delicious offer.
"So, whether you’re having a Jamie Vardy dinner party or a Filip Helander get together, Ikea’s plate of two halves is the perfect match meal.”
But some mischievous England fans have threatened to boycott Ikea ahead of the match — saying we need to "hit them where it hurts".
One fan joked that if England lost the game “I’m going to Ikea and unscrewing all the show cabinets and beds.”
Ikea's Joakin Bahy responded: "Being both British and Swedish, we are naturally thrilled about the game.
"Like many Swedes and Brits, we’re very diplomatic so in the words of ABBA, and Baddiel and Skinner, ‘The Winner Takes It All’ but whatever happens… ‘It’s Coming Home’.”
More than 30million people are expected to tune in to watch the clash tomorrow afternoon — bringing the nation to a standstill as it overtakes last week's 24m-strong audience.
And a summer scorcher is on the cards as 31C temperatures are forecast across the country.
Pub industry insiders say 8million extra pints will be poured on the sport-packed Super Saturday — raking in £24m more for landlords.
Sweden v England will kick off at 3pm tomorrow on BBC1.
