World Cup 2018: Sweden and Switzerland blasted for ‘worst knockout game ever’… and give England hope
FOLLOWING three days of drama in the knockout stages, Sweden and Switzerland played out a boring affair.
The former were the victors beating their fellow Europeans 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup and set up a tie with England.
But after two games that went to penalties and thrillers in France's 4-3 win over Argentina and Belgium beating Japan 3-2, fans were not pleased with how Sweden and Switzerland played.
Emil Forsberg gave Sweden the lead in the 66th minute before VAR needed to consulted to determine an initial penalty call for the Scandinavians.
It was overturned for free-kick but Switzerland still had Michael Lang sent off for his challenge on Martin Olsen for the foul.
While it was a dramatic ending, fans on Twitter were still grateful that it was over...
England will be Sweden's next opponents after they beat Colombia on penalties on Tuesday.
After Spain were knocked out by Russia, the Three Lions have arguably their easiest run to the final with no nation in their side of the draw ranked higher than them.
And now Sweden's dull win has got fans dreaming of a first World Cup success since 1966.
