CESC FABREGAS still believes Spain are a better side than Russia, despite their World Cup last-16 defeat to the tournament hosts.

The Spanish slipped to a 4-3 defeat on penalties following a tame 1-1 draw at 90 minutes and after extra-time.

However, Fabregas has slammed Russia for their negative approach to the game, while also criticising Spain boss Fernando Hierro for dropping Andres Iniesta.

After the defeat, an emotional Fabregas claimed: "I expected a different type of game today.

"I think Spain is a much better side than Russia.

"What I saw today Russia had a plan which was to go to penalties.

"I'm sad seeing the faces of my team-mates.

"Andres Iniesta's last game probably. It doesn't deserve to end like this. Yes [he should have started]."

The surprise result is good news for England however, who are now arguably the strongest side in that half of the draw.

Gareth Southgate's men next face Colombia in the last-16, with Switzerland or Sweden the potential quarter-final opponents.
