Panama captain Roman Torres retires from international football after World Cup exit
Having scored the dramatic goal that took Panama to its first ever World Cup, the Seattle Sounders defender has bowed out
PANAMA captain Roman Torres has retired following his nation's exit from the World Cup.
The Seattle Sounders defender is one of six Panama internationals retiring following their elimination at the group stage.
Torres, 32, scored the goal that took Panama to its first ever World Cup.
The Central Americans finished bottom of Group F with zero points, after losing to Belgium, England and Tunisia.
They were the worst team in the tournament, as one of only two to finish with zero points.
Egypt also failed to pick up a point but Panama's goal difference was worse than the North African country by five.
Torres will be one of six players to retire.
He is joined by Gabriel Gómez, Luis Tejada, Jaime Penedo, Blas Pérez and Felipe Baloy.
But while we won't see Torres in a Panama shirt again, we may see him in the Premier League.
Before the tournament, the defender said: "A good World Cup could help me win a move to Europe.
"I have had interest from England in the past. Blackpool and Swansea were after me in 2010.
"Then I had a trial with Nottingham Forest in early 2012. Only a disagreement over personal terms prevented a deal."
