World Cup 2018: Australia have something to play for and that makes them worth backing

It is not a big stretch for Australia to reach the last 16 - victory over Peru should be enough

Australia aren’t having a great time of the sporting front, and their participation in the World Cup hangs by a thread.

They need to beat Peru and then hope that France do them a favour in putting Denmark to the sword.

The good news for the Aussies is that their South American opponents have been goalless and pointless in Russia.

Australia are 21/10 outsiders to win the game with us at despite Peru’s poor performances so far.

That could be a good bet based solely on the fact that they are the only team with something to play for.

At the same time Denmark need to hope that France rest players and go easy on them.

A draw is enough for the Danes, and the price for that occurrence is a short looking 17/10.

Tuesday night it’s all about Argentina’s loose grip on their 2018 World Cup hopes.

A win over Nigeria should be enough, although Iceland and Croatia could still throw a spanner in the works with their result.

Let’s face it, they can’t get any worse.

Argentina should succeed in this last throw of the dice against the unconvincing Africans and are worth adding to accumulators at a price of 11/20.

But a better single bet could be the ‘winning margin’ special at Betway. Argentina to win the game by exactly one goal is a generous 5/2.

Croatia are already through to the knock-out stages and are yet to concede a goal.

Iceland should be no match for them and I’d expect them to keep a third group stage clean-sheet, that’s a better bet than the match odds, so back that at 7/5.
