World Cup 2018: Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic to rest players against Iceland in further blow to Argentina

The Croatian coach could help to put the final nail in the coffin for Argentina by giving some of his fringe players a chance

CROATIA could rest some of their key players in their final World Cup Group D fixture against Iceland next week, according to reports.

Manager Zlatko Dalic wants to keep his squad fresh, after they secured their progression to the knockout stages with a 3-0 victory over Argentina, as reported by .

A weakened Croatia side would give Iceland the perfect opportunity to claim victory and all-but end any hopes the South Americans have of progressing.

Argentina are on the brink of elimination following two disappointing performances.

Their defeat by Croatia means that their fate is out of their hands, with just one point - a 1-1 draw against Iceland - from their first two games.

The Nordic nation would need a win against their European counterparts and better Argentina's result to remain above, as they are currently ahead on goal difference.

When asked of his plans to rest some of his stars, Dalic's answer was short and sweet: "Yes, I will."

Argentina were one of the pre-tournament favourites, having reached the final in Brazil four years ago.

But their passion and determination has been questioned, unlike Croatia's.

Dalic added: "I said this would be the easiest match, not because Argentina are poor but because of our motivation. My players and everyone at home enjoyed it."

The South Americans will need to beat Nigeria next Tuesday, and hope Iceland lose to ensure they reach the Round of 16.
