Why’s there a delay on BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub and how else can I live stream World Cup 2018 games?

The broadcasters are streaming the World Cup matches, but some fans are complaining of an annoying lag

If you stream the game the sound of others watching in on TV may give you a clue about what's ahead

MANY people watching the World Cup on iPlayer and ITV Hub have complained about the time lag.

Fans streaming the game are finding themselves between two and five minutes behind the TV coverage - which means they are hearing puzzling cheers or wails from their neighbours or pub punters who are watching the game on the telly.

Why is there a delay on BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub?

Apparently the reason is that it takes longer for the action to be streamed than it does for it to be beamed live on TV.

A BBC spokesperson told : "Currently, live broadcast coverage is quicker to get to people’s homes than coverage streamed live over the internet.

"There are many factors that affect this but, at the moment, live online video goes through a process that introduces greater latency when compared to the more direct TV broadcast.

“While this is normal today, innovation in online streaming technology is driving continuing improvements, including reducing the delay.”
