World Cup 2018: VAR controversy as Antoine Greizmann penalty decision splits opinion

World Cup history was created as VAR used for the very first time. But once again it sparked major controversy with replays appearing to show Josh Risdon touched the ball.

WORLD CUP history was created as VAR was used for the first time in France's clash with Australia... but once again it sparked major controversy.

Antoine Griezmann burst through on goal only to fall under the challenge of Josh Risdon.

The referee decided not to award a penalty despite France's protests and play continued.

But moments later play was brought to a halt and the referee was in contact with assistants as they watched replays of the challenge.

After a brief pause the ref pointed to the penalty spot much to the disbelief of the Aussie players before Griezmann put the French a goal ahead.

And they had every right to be angry as viewers watching on TV found three controversies with the decision.

Firstly some eagle-eyed viewers believe Risdon did get the slightest touch on the ball before bringing down Griezmann.

There are arguments that the initial contact in the tackle was made outside the box and in fact should have been a free-kick.

One fan on Twitter wrote: "No pen that... what's the point in this VAR! Griezmann falls well after the challenge and Australian player plays the ball."

Another said: "How can the referee get it wrong after reviewing it on VAR?! Risdon touches the ball on to Griezmann's foot... not a penalty for me!"

Finally others claim Risdon should have been brandished a red card and not just a yellow.

But the majority of those watching believe the referee made the correct decision.

Commentator Derek Rae said: "Game of opinions of course but French pen for me, a clear pen.

"That there was a touch in the ball doesn’t absolve a player from responsibility for what happens thereafter. Not in the modern era & in a World Cup. Beauty of VAR is the ref gets a 2nd look and can judge for himself."
