They claim the 37cm-long flags and the 10cm stickers are a health and safety hazard as they could blow off.

The ban affects 125,000 staff at 1,400 delivery depots.

But one postman, based in South West London, insisted: “It’s bonkers, frankly.

“Many posties want to show their support for England but we’re not allowed to do so.”

A van driver colleague said: “Other vehicles use car flags without causing accidents, so why are we any different?”

Former postman Stephen Headley, 48, blasted the Royal Mail’s barmy rules.

Stephen, who quit two years ago to become a bus driver, is set to display a large England flag at his home in Bury, Gtr Manchester. He did the same for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

“Why can we not be proud of being English and display our flag? It’s not a hazard, it’s PC. It’s stupid.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said the firm had a duty of care to its staff and the public.

He said: “It’s a company-wide policy which covers flags and stickers and covers trollies, bikes, vans and lorries.
