World Cup 2018: Christian Benteke axed from Belgium squad despite personalised mattress as Vincent Kompany and Adnan Januzaj make cut

CHRISTIAN BENTEKE has been cut from Roberto Martinez’s final 23-man Belgium World Cup squad, allegedly due to injury.

Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany has been deemed fit, and ex-Manchester United man Adnan Januzaj also makes the cut.

Benteke had been included in the preliminary squad and even had a personalised mattress delivered, but has been omitted from the final 23 for Russia, with various reports suggesting it was down to an injury.

However, Kompany, who had to leave the last friendly against Portugal early, is deemed fit enough to make the plane.

Meanwhile, there were the usual stellar names such as Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertens.

While, Januzaj, who missed out on a place at Euro 2016 after a difficult season, is back in the squad — and will play in his second World Cup.

Belgium are packed with some of the biggest names in football, but failed to show their potential, with quarter-final eliminations at the past two major tournaments.

There is real concern Martinez has yet to find the right system to get the best out of the incredible array of superstars he has at his disposal.
