Bobby Charlton
Sir Bobby Charlton is one of England’s greatest-ever footballers. The attacking midfielder from Northumberland played most of his career at Manchester United. After surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, where many of his team-mates were killed, Charlton went on to win the World Cup with England in 1966 and the European Cup with United in 1968. He was also named Ballon d’Or winner the year England lifted the World Cup. He scored 199 goals for United and a then-record 49 goals for the Three Lions, including two in a World Cup semi-final. Charlton died on October 21, 2023 after a long battle with dementia.
