THE HISTORY BOYS
England v Germany has produced some epic fixtures over the years. As Raheem Sterling and Serge Gnabry prepare for tonight's Euro last 16 showdown, we look back at some iconic moments..
1966 AND ALL THAT
England 4 West Germany 2, Wembley Bobby beaming. Jules Rimet gleaming. Were we dreaming? No, we really won the World Cup. You may have heard about it.
ITALIA '90: GAZZA BLUBS
England 1 West Germany 1 (AET, West Germany win 3-4 on pens), Turin Lineker's equaliser, Waddle's skyed penalty.. unforgettable moments. But it was Gazza's devastation after being booked in the semi which had a nation bawling even before we lost the match.
Germany 1 England 1 (AET, Germany win 6-5 on pens), Wembley England had scored five out of five in the penalty shootout. Gareth Southgate wasn't expecting to take one. We won't dwell on what happened next.
EURO '96: OH GAWD, GARETH
England 1 Germany 0, Charleroi, Belgium Our first victory over Germany since 1966, yet the game least talked about. Shearer's 53rd-minute header won this Group A match. But defeats to Portugal and Romania sent us home - along with Germany.
EURO 2000: THE FORGOTTEN WIN
Germany 1 England 5, Munich Nobody saw this coming, not least famously goal-shy striker Emile Heskey who put away England's fifth after one from Steven Gerrard and a Michael Owen hat-trick in this bonkers World Cup qualifier.
2001: 5-1, EVEN HESKEY SCORED!
2010: 3 LIONS LAMPED
Germany 4 England 1, Bloemfontein Lampard's 39th-minute drive hit the bar then went a foot over the line, but the ref missed it. Was this karma after Hurst's dubious second in the 1966 final? Maybe. Would we have won if Frank's goal had stood? Er, No.
