Jurassic Park, Home Alone and The Matrix voted among the greatest movies of the 1990s in new poll

The poll also reveals film fans' favourite actors, actresses and directors of the 90s

A NEW poll by Brits show we still love cult classics Jurassic Park, Home Alone and The Matrix – but who tops our list?

While Steven Spielberg’s ground-breaking dinosaur hit continues to spawn sequels, Home Alone is loved all year-round despite being a festive flick.

Film buffs have also lauded The Matrix, which turns 20 this year, for taking computer-generated imagery to a new level and influencing a host of other movies since.

But taking the number one spot is the 1994 hit The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and based on the Stephen King novel.

Other popular films in the top 40 include; Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless and Titanic.

Commissioned by CHILI, the subscription-free movie and TV streaming service, the research of 2,000 adults also found films from the 1990s more popular than any other era.

According to those polled, this is partly down to their catchy soundtracks, quotable lines and shocking plot twists.

Steven Spielberg was voted best director of the 90s, with his films Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan all featuring in the top 40.

Tom Hanks, who won two Oscars in the 90s, was declared best male actor and best female actor went to Julia Roberts.

Among the favourite movie scenes of this era are Andy’s escape in The Shawshank Redemption and the “Life is like a box of chocolates” moment from Forrest Gump.

The iconic “Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal” scene from Home Alone and the “ll never let go” scene from Titanic were close behind.

Thanks to the likes of Groundhog Day, Dumb and Dumber and The Big Lebowski, the research also found the 90s did comedy movies better than any other genre.
