Joshua Buatsi finally makes his pro boxing debut and admits he is happy to be called a ‘clever clogger’

JOSHUA BUATSI makes his long-awaited bow in the paid ranks admitting he does not mind being called ‘clever clogger’.

The light-heavyweight,  who won bronze at the Rio Olympics, has gained a reputation as a knockout artist.

And he intends to clog his first opponent as a pro when he faces Spaniard Carlos Mena at London’s O2 Arena tonight.

Buatsi, 24, jokingly admits he delayed his professional switch so he would not be forced to pay back some of his university expenses.

And during his year out of the ring, he completed his degree  in management studies and sports science, gaining a 2:1 before deciding to turn professional.

Buatsi said: “It was horrible dragging myself out of bed in the morning.

“I was training three times a day for the Rio Games, going back home and all I wanted to do was sleep.

“But instead I am opening my laptop to write essays until late then getting up early to run again.

“I had to give the uni a lot of money back if I didn’t complete the degree so I thought let’s get it done.

“It  was something I’d committed to so I had to see it through.

“I could have turned pro straight after the Rio Games but instead went back to uni because I thought there is one year left for the degree course so let’s do it.

“I also didn’t want to rush a decision about turning professional.

“The stereotype of a boxer is someone who isn’t that clever but I wanted to show not all boxers are dumb and can show they can gain a degree.

“My mum and dad drummed into me the importance of getting an education and I’m glad I  listened to them.”
