'I was 38 and it was terrifying!'

The One Show’s Alex Jones admits her fears she’d never have a child after mum had menopause at 44

The presenter admits that she didn’t realise the impact age has on fertility

ALEX Jones has revealed she feared she might not ever conceive after learning last year that her mother went through the menopause at 44, admitting that she was 38 and “terrified.”

The 39-year-old presenter who is now pregnant with her first child opened up on This Morning about a documentary she filmed about fertility and discovered that she had been “naïve” about her fertility and life expectancy.

“My mum went through the menopause at 44 and that's six years older than me,” she told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

“I wasn't pregnant when I filmed the documentary. I was 38 and it was terrifying. I was naïve. I knew age impacts your fertility but I didn't realise to what extent.”

She added that she never knew that her mum went through the menopause at such a young age and dismissed the suggestion that she had put her career before having children, explaining that she had simply met husband Charlie Thomson later in life.

“Mum and I never talked about it, it never came up. I always wanted a family. Mum never put pressure on me or my sister to have kids.

“She probably thought I didn't need to know it.

“I'm not just a career girl. No one leaves it late on purpose. For me, family is a number one priority. I didn't meet my husband til later on in life. I thought it would be OK.”

Alex, who announced her pregnancy at the start of this month, added: “At the age of 35, your fertility falls off a cliff. It feels young but there are lots of techniques these days.

“Having said that, people don't always meet the person earlier in life. But it's not a dead loss, people differ inside depending on how you take care of yourself.”
