EDEN WHO?

Hazard is just a memory for Chelsea as Mount and Abraham continue to step in for Lampard

EDEN HAZARD’S departure from Chelsea last summer was supposed to herald a season of struggle at Stamford Bridge.

It hasn’t quite worked out that way. Now Hazard is a memory – a happy one, but a memory.

Frank Lampard and his young team have ushered in a new era, and Blues fans are delighted.

Hazard gone? No problem. Transfer embargo? No problem. Rudiger and Kante injured? No problem.

Lampard took over from Maurizio Sarri after a year in charge at Derby and brought Mason Mount, 20, back with him after a loan spell with the Rams. Now he’s starring in Lampard’s midfield.

Tammy Abraham, 22, was recalled from loan as Aston Villa. He has scored nine Premier League goals.

Fikayo Tomori, 21, came into the back line. Christian Pulisic, 21, signed in January to beat the embargo, scored again last night.

Avoid all comparisons with the Busby Babes or even United’s class of 92. This is a different era.

And it’s not just the youngsters. Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic both put in the sort of midfield shifts that are so necessary at places like Watford.

As for the rock-bottom Hornets, it’s going to be a long, hard winter.

Despite the tight score they were not in Chelsea’s class.

They must look for salvation – and their first league win this season - to games this month against Norwich, Burnley and Southampton.

This performance against a Chelsea side headed for great things will at least lift morale.
