A MUM OF FOUR who was left paralysed in a horror bike accident reduced DIY SOS viewers to tears last night as her house was transformed.
Fitness fanatic Amanda Newton, 45, suffered the life-changing injuries when she slammed into a signpost at 40 mph after her brakes failed as she trained for an Iron Man contest.
The impact left her with eleven broken bones, a punctured lung and a broken back - leaving her unable to walk.
Ever since the accident in West Sussex in 2015 Amanda has been determined to “be a mum again”, but the layout of the family home has left her having to rely on her four teenage children and husband, Vic, to care for her.
And now, following a visit from the BBC makeover show, hosted by Nick Knowles, the family’s cramped terrace in Arundel, West Sussex, has been transformed into a spacious five-bedroom home which will allow Amanda to have the independence she has so sorely craved.
After she was shown the transformation, she said: “All I wanted to be when I had my accident was a mum again.
“With everything you’ve done you’ve mended my broken heart, because you have given me my mum duties back again.”
Viewers hailed the episode on social media, with Keith Jordan telling how it left him a “blubbering wreck”.
Another wrote: “I really tried not to cry. Epic fail.”
Other comments included: “Things on telly don’t normally ‘get me’ but tonight’s #DIYSOS has just got me big time! What an amazing woman and family”.
Another said: “What a lovely programme. Always gets me so emosh, it really does change lives for the better.”
The episode saw the DIY SOS volunteers remodel Amanda’s home in just nine days - installing a wheelchair lift so she can get upstairs.
The team also added a kitchen countertop that can be raised and lowered with a push of the button.
Amanda’s four kids - Megan, Jacob, Amelia and Joe told of their pride at their mother’s determination.
They were all given new bedrooms, with access for Amanda to go in and kiss the youngest two goodnight.
