AMB THE WINNER IS

Love Island winner Amber Gill topped viewer popularity polls throughout series

LOVE Island winner Amber Gill topped the majority of viewer popularity polls throughout the series, the Sun Online can reveal.

The Geordie, 21, scooped the £50,000 prize with partner Greg O'Shea on Monday in what was described as a shock result.

But the fiery beauty therapist came out on top in most polls with the public, making her win no surprise to those with connections to the ITV2 show.

And her favourable results came regardless of who she was coupled up with, or whether she was single at the time.

A show insider said: "It may have been a bit of a surprise that she won but the people connected to the show could see her popularity throughout the course of it.

"She was so in favour that it seemed to be a case of whoever she coupled up with would end up the winner with her."

Ahead of the final, bookies including Ladbrokes made her and Greg, 24, a professional rugby player, favourites to win despite the popularity of Molly-Mae Hague, 20, and Tommy Fury, also 20, who were boyfriend and girlfriend.

Viewers' hearts broke with Amber's when she was dumped by Michael Griffiths for Joanna Chimonides.

Amber got her revenge when she chose Greg over Michael, who came crawling back to her following Joanna's exit, in a re-coupling.

Following Amber's victory, Michael joked that he would not have split the £50,000 prize — alluding to the shock envelope twist that saw Greg share his portion of the winnings — with her.

He told Capital FM: ""I'm so gassed for her, like, she's been through a mad journey and she needs that", adding that she "was always going to split it anyway".

There are now odds of 6/4 that Greg will propose to Amber within the next five months.

Betway’s Alan Alger said: “In one of the most surprising outcomes of the show’s history, Greg and Amber were crowned the Love Island winners, beating long-term favourites Tommy and Molly-Mae.

“Despite being a couple for just two weeks, the Irish rugby-player and Geordie lass scooped the £50k prize and we’re not ruling out the possibility of the pair ending 2019 on an even bigger high."
