Love Island gets 2,000 Ofcom complaints, with Maura straddling Tommy the most offensive scene

WITH its “scenes of a sexual nature”, emotionally-charged confrontations and endless love triangles, there is always something controversial going down in the villa.

So it’s no surprise that ITV2’s biggest show has attracted around 2,000 complaints so far during its eight-week run.

The most moaned-about scene came after Maura straddled boxer Tommy and asked him to kiss her.

The episode aired after the 9pm watershed on June 14 and received 726 complaints – 709 from viewers who complained that Maura “sexually harassed” Tommy.

However, after assessing the complaints Ofcom said: “While we recognise many viewers disapproved of a contestant’s behaviour, we took into account the context in which it occurred, including the nature of Maura and Tommy’s relationship, before and after.”

Another 700 viewers complained about the June 16 episode, which saw Lucie distressed by her relationship with Joe, who was also branded “controlling” by charity Women’s Aid.

But Ofcom said: “Most viewers would expect to see emotionally charged scenes in a programme which shines a light on people’s relationships.

“We also took into account the contestant received support from others, particularly ­following her partner’s departure.”
