Her split-second smile didn't escape fans, with one raging: "Just look at Amy’s face when she realised Lucie and Joe had to split, what a horrible girl 😡."

Many also remarked that Amy didn't go to check on a sobbing Lucie when it was revealed Joe would be joining Elma Pazar in leaving the villa.

One even compared her to Rachel McAdams' bitchy character in the movie Mean Girls, writing: "Amy is a modern version of Regina George."

Love Island recap - Catch up on all the action from episode 14 of the 2019 series

“There has been a backlash against him and as part of ITV’s new duty of care, they’re doing everything they can to help him deal with it when he comes out.”

Show bosses have been briefing him about the wave of criticism, which saw hundreds of viewers complain about him giving Lucie a dressing down for spending time with Tommy.

He told her: "I'm not happy with it. It's strange. I think it's time for you to get close with the girls."

Domestic abuse charity Women's Aid yesterday explained: "Abusive relationships often start off with subtle signs of control, so it’s important that it is recognised at an early stage.

"Love Island viewers are now very vocal in calling out unhealthy behaviour between couples on the show, and this is a positive development."

Horrified fans also called on ITV to step in to help tormented Lucie, with a flood of Twitter protests and more than 300 complaints to telly watchdog Ofcom.
