EASTENDERS fans have been left heartbroken after Joyce Murray died and her husband Ted failed to realise.
The pensioner - who was played by actress Maggie Steed in the BBC soap - seems to have died peacefully in her sleep after a tense day with her husband who wanted to support his chess prodigy Bernadette Taylor at her tournament instead of waiting to call their son in Australia on his 50th birthday.
Fortunately the day of rows ended reasonably amicably as Joyce sent Ted to see Bernadette after realising he was trying to make a difference after being a bad dad to their own children.
With Bernie just narrowly missing out on victory at the tournament, the pair had a lot to celebrate with her being offered a membership at the club.
Ted's good mood continued as he returned home to discover a note from Joyce saying she had gone to bed early and hoping Bernie won.
As he said goodnight to his wife, viewers realised with horror that she had died and Ted just hadn't noticed, assuming she was asleep.
They were utterly heartbroken over the shock death and many took to social media to share their pain.
One wrote: "Omg no Joyce"
A second tweeted: "Heartbreak for Ted :("
Another added: "RIP Joyce Murray. Poor Ted Will be so heartbroken"
