LEGENDARY actor Harry Johnson has died following a long illness.

Johnson, 81, starred in the original 1970s TV series Battlestar Galactica, and the popular series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Law & Order.

The voice actor, from Plainfield, New Jersey, died on January 2 in Los Angeles, his wife of 15 years Christiane told .

Johnson's voice has been heard in a raft of iconic TV series.

Most of his TV appearances are credited as Chip Johnson, per .

He played a First Warrior in the pilot episode of Battlestar Galactica which aired in 1978.

Johnson has also appeared on hit shows including M*A*S*H, The A-Team, and LA Law.

He made two appearances in Law & Order, featuring in episodes that aired in 1992 and 1993.

Johnson also starred in episodes of Cold Case, Heartland, and Quincy M.E.

Shows such as Days of Our Lives, Judging Amy, and the American drama series The Guardian are included among his credits.

He played Dr. Hinterman in an episode of the sitcom Nurses, which aired on NBC between September 1991 and May 1994.

Johnson was also known for his role in the Harry and Louise advertisements during the 1990s.

The ads were part of a campaign that lobbied against Bill Clinton's health care proposals.

Johnson and co-star Louise Caire Clark portrayed a middle-class couple in the commercials.

His voice has been used in the Need for Speed video game series.

Away from the screen, Johnson's wife Christiane said he loved to sail and was known for sharing his wit with his co-workers.

He is the author of the book Fugitive Romance: The Fictional Memoir of a Hollywood Screenwriter.

He's survived by his wife and two stepchildren.
