Decades later, fans of The Delfonics are mourning the loss of the group’s lead singer William “Poogie” Hart.
Who was The Delfonics’ William Hart?
Born on January 14, 1945, William Hart, who also went by the nickname Poogie, was one of the founding members of The Delfonics.
On May 14, 1968, the group released their debut studio album La La Means I Love You, which sprung the hit track of the same name.
The band crafted the popular songs The Shadow of Your Smile, Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time), and Break Your Promise.
Their other hits include Ready or Not Here I Come (Can’t Hide from Love) and I’m Sorry.

The Delfonics distributed four more full-length albums before calling it quits in 1975.
Following the breakup, Poogie and his former bandmates went on to form their own separate groups until they reunited during the 1990s.
The popular R&B act continued to perform throughout the 2000s and 2010s as well.
The Delfonics’ music was featured in several movies and TV shows.
Malcolm in the Middle, Jackie Brown, Euphoria, Atlanta, and The Sopranos all utilized the band’s music for their soundtracks.
Recording artists such as Prince, Aretha Franklin, The Jackson 5, and Missy Elliott have all paid tribute to The Delfonics by covering or sampling their hits from the 60s and 70s.
At the 1971 GRAMMY Awards, the popular act took home the accolade for Best R&B Performance for Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time).
What was William’s cause of death?
On July 15, 2022, William’s death was announced after he experienced complications during surgery.
On Thursday, July 14, he was rushed to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after he had trouble breathing, his son told .
Later that day, he was pronounced dead at the age of 77.
The singer was one of the last surviving members of The Delfonics’ original lineup, the classic act is survived by Wilbert Hart.
As news of William’s passing made headlines, the fan tributes began pouring in on social media.
On Twitter, one fan wrote: “You blew all our minds this time RIP.”
