What cancer did Toby Keith have?

Country music star Toby Keith was surrounded by his family when he died on February 5, 2024

TOBY Keith put his music career on hold after he was diagnosed with cancer in June 2022.

The Grammy Award nominee passed away at 62 on February 5, 2024.

What cancer did Toby Keith have?

On June 12, 2022, Toby Keith released a statement on social media revealing that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

"Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer," Keith wrote. "I've spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax."

"I am looking forward to spend this time with my family.

"But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can't wait."

As a result of his announcement, his performance at the Ohio State Fair slated for July 28, 2022, was immediately canceled. Additional performances in 2022 were also canceled.

In 2006, Keith started the  to help kids diagnosed with cancer in Oklahoma.

In 2014, he then expanded the foundation to include , which offers pediatric cancer patients and their families a place to stay while being treated.

On June 30, 2023, Toby performed for the first time since his cancer diagnosis.

"Basically, everything is in a real positive trend. You never know with cancer, so you have to prepare," he told fans via .

"I've got more wind. And I'm thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere just to see if I can get through two hours.

"All I gotta do is see if I can get through two or three nights of work and get a little break in this chemo, and we'll go back to work… I’m ready. That's living."

Keith, who had been receiving chemotherapy for cancer, was surrounded by his family, including his wife Tricia Lucus, when he died.

Who was Toby Keith?

Toby Keith was an American country music star born on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma.

The star was known for his popular tracks, including Red Solo Cup and Should've Been a Cowboy.

Keith worked in oil fields after graduating high school. At age 20, he formed the Easy Money Band with other musicians and started playing country music in Oklahoma and Texas.

Keith moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in the early 1990s, where he integrated into the music scene. By 1993, his single, Should've Been a Cowboy, reached number one on the US Billboard Country charts.

Keith is survived by his wife Tricia Lucus. They were married in 1984.

The pair shared three children: daughter Krystal, son Stelen, and adopted daughter Shelley.

What are the symptoms of stomach cancer?

Like all forms of cancer, the disease can be fatal if not detected early.

If the illness has not spread outside the stomach, the five-year survival rate is 70 percent, according to the .

However, if the disease has spread to surrounding tissues or organs, the five-year survival rate drops to 32 percent.

The early stages of stomach cancer are often harder to catch because they rarely cause symptoms, so it is always recommended to get routine cancer screening, especially if there is a family history of the disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, the symptoms that can occur include:

  • Weight loss (without trying)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Feeling full after only eating a small amount of food
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen

If stomach cancer spreads to the liver, there can also be yellowing of the skin and eyes, also known as jaundice.
