Britney Spears ‘got engaged to Sam Asghari in 2020 but kept it secret’ until dad Jamie agreed to end conservatorship

BRITNEY Spears got engaged to fiancé Sam Asghari over a year ago but kept it secret for months until her dad filed to end her conservatorship, she revealed to a friend.

The pop superstar, 40, told a pal she had said “Yes” to her boyfriend Sam, 27, during Christmas of 2020.

But the happy news was only revealed in September of last year when Britney posted a video of her engagement ring on Instagram with the caption: “I can’t f***ing believe it.”

The announcement was made just five days after Britney’s dad Jamie Spears asked the Superior Court in LA to “seriously consider” ending Britney’s conservatorship following a bitter court battle over his role as her conservator.

It also came shortly after Iranian-born fitness trainer Sam had been spotted by paparazzi at high-end jeweller Cartier in Beverly Hills in what was seen as a sign that he was about to propose.

A source exclusively told The Sun: “Britney told a friend that she actually got engaged to Sam during Christmas the year before last. 

“She said she had kept it on the down low and only two people knew that they were planning on getting married that far back.   

“Britney told the friend that one of the diamonds fell out of her engagement ring and Sam let her know he was going to replace it.”

The insider added: “So when the stories about an engagement ring came out, she claimed it was really nothing new to her. 

“Britney said very few people knew because she can’t tell everybody everything.”

The Mississippi-born music legend told her friend that she believes the relationship is “the real deal” but that the couple were in no rush to tie the knot. 

Britney desperately revealed in a bombshell court hearing last June that her conservatorship team would not let her get married or have another baby.

SHOCKING ‘ABUSIVE’ COURT CLAIMS

Calling for an end to the “abusive” arrangement, the mom of two said: “I want to be able to get married and have a baby.

“I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. 

“I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. 

“But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children — any more children.”

Britney’s engagement to Sam was announced on September 12 following a whirlwind two weeks of momentous moves to bring her 13-year conservatorship to an end and what seemed to be hints that Sam was about to propose.

Even before that, in July, Sam had sarcastically told a paparazzi congratulating him on rumors of his engagement to Britney that they had been “married for about five years”.

He quipped “We secretly got married in Hawaii. That’s one of the stories that I don’t know, but I see it on newspapers” before jokingly adding: “Yeah, we have twins.”

Then on September 2, Sam was pictured at the Cartier store amid speculation that he had been shopping for an engagement ring. 

The following week, on September 7, Jamie filed his petition asking the Superior Court to “now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required”.

He had already agreed the previous month that he would eventually step away from the conservatorship but the September filing signalled that the court battle which had raged for over a year was coming to an end. 

On the Friday of that same week Sam appeared to upload and then delete a picture of an engagement ring, sending Britney’s fans into a frenzy. 

But in a later Instagram Live he said: “Account got hacked and was photoshopped – calm down everyone!”

The joyous official announcement on social media came just two days later.

At the end of that month Judge Brenda J. Penny suspended Jamie as the conservator of his daughter’s estate.

And in November the conservatorship was terminated after 13 years.

Later this year there will be a trial to determine whether Jamie stole from Britney’s estate and spied on her while he was her conservator.

Britney has been married twice before getting engaged to Sam.

She wed childhood pal Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004 after the pair tied the knot in Las Vegas.

Later that same year she married backup dancer Kevin Federline and had sons Preston and Jayden with him before the couple divorced in 2007.

Britney and Sam – who began dating in 2016- have still made no announcement on their wedding plans.

The Sun reached out to representatives for Britney and Sam for comment but did not hear back.
