Camila Cabello takes moral high ground in self-titled debut album following Fifth Harmony exit
The singer's inaugural turn is clever and packed with emotion, proving her decision to quit the band 13 months ago was the right one
CAMILA CABELLO spent four years in FIFTH HARMONY before quitting in a shock move 13 months ago.
And the singer’s departure has certainly paid off, having successfully forged a strong sound of her own with her self-titled debut album.
Not only has she lodged five weeks at No1 with her megahit Havana, she has avoided the obvious dance-heavy route to chart success on the record, instead crafting an album of clever pop and emotional ballads.
And despite her former bandmates taking a public dig at her when they pushed a mannequin representing her off stage at the MTV VMAs in August, she takes the moral high ground and stays silent on her exit.
The real theme of the album, out next Friday, is one of lust and heartbreak over a partner no one even knew Camila had.
With snappy production and an original sound for 2018, going solo has got to be the best thing Camila has ever done.
Alongside the already released Havana, Never Be The Same and Real Friends, there are seven new songs on the album.
Here’s a track-by-track rundown of the lyrics:
ALL THESE YEARS: It’s a bittersweet acoustic introduction to the album about an encounter with an ex. She sings: “Your hair’s grown a little longer, your arms look a little stronger. Your eyes just as I remember, your smile’s just a little softer.”
SHE LOVES CONTROL: A sultry summer number flecked with Spanish guitar and a thumping bassline. Camila unapologetically opens with the lines: “Cold, ‘cause she has been here before, she doesn’t cry anymore, no looking back.”
INSIDE OUT: This sunny reggaeton tune features a bouncy and danceable melody and suitably playful lyrics to boot. She sings: “I wanna love you inside out, show me what your inside ‘bout.”
CONSEQUENCES: Her most deeply personal and tear-jerking ballad with her powerful vocals against a delicate piano. She sings about the impact of a partner on her life, even revealing: “Lost a little weight because I wasn’t eating.”
SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE: There is a serious piano introduction into this heartfelt number with ethereal backing vocals. She sings: “Something’s gotta change but I know it won’t. No reason to stay, it’s a good reason to go.” At another point she adds: “I think I’m breaking right now.”
IN THE DARK: This smooth R&B tune is all about trying to get a partner to open up to her to make their relationship work. She hums: “Why can’t you show me who are you in the dark? Show me the scary part."
INTO IT: The sexiest tune with sharp and catchy production. After opening with falsetto vocals, she croons: “I’m into it, whatever trouble that you’re thinking, I could get into it. I see a king size bed in the corner we should get into it.”
