EastEnders: Ian Beale and Rainie Cross history revisited as the truth leaves Bobby distraught
EASTENDERS' troubled Bobby Beale is about to find out the whole truth about what happened between his dad, Ian, and Rainie Cross on the night he killed his sister, Lucy.
But while Bobby – who’s played by Clay Milner Russell – will struggle when he learns all the gruesome details, let’s remind ourselves of what went down.
What happened between Ian and Rainie when Lucy was killed?
When EastEnders legend Lucy Beale was killed by her brother Bobby, their dad Ian (Adam Woodyatt) was initially one of the prime suspects as his whereabouts on the night on question was, erm, questionable.
During this time, a stressed Ian kept avoiding calls from someone called R on his phone.
Later, it emerged that Rainie was the mysterious R and she was actually blackmailing Ian as she had some pretty crucial information about where he was the night his daughter was killed.
Rainie, played by actress Tanya Franks, made a surprise appearance at Ian’s restaurant because he was clearly having trouble picking up the phone.
But what did she know?
It could only be bad news because, up until this point, Rainie – who is the sister of Max Branning’s ex-wife, Tanya – caused nothing but trouble.
She was a drug addict, getting Phil Mitchell hooked on crack cocaine. She was also a prostitute.
And this – it was soon revealed – was how she knew where Ian was that fateful Good Friday. He was paying her for sex.
At the time, Ian was engaged to Denise Fox (yes, that happened) and Rainie threatened to reveal the truth to her and to Lucy’s grieving twin brother, Peter.
More on EastEnders
Rainie revealed to Patrick Truman that Ian was using her services, which caused the old timer to suffer a stroke.
Meanwhile, Ian turned to Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) who helped him stand up to Rainie. But as they were trying to find her on the streets, the Vic landlord got arrested for soliciting a prostitute.
Mick was less than impressed about Ian’s mistake costing him his good name – not to mention Linda’s wrath.
Eventually the truth came out when Rainie told Denise the truth, clearing Mick’s name but inevitably ending Ian’s engagement to Denise.
