Worried that he’s working too hard, she surprises him at the hospital with lunch, but Ali is distracted as his dealer is arrested and taken away.

As he takes his anger and frustration out on a bemused Maria, it’s clear he’s got some serious making up to do.

Later, a desperate Ali heads to the medical centre where he tries to convince Dr Gaddas to prescribe him some diazepam, trying to hide his withdrawal symptoms.

But the GP isn’t fooled and instead urges Ali to get some help for his addiction. Ali insists she’s got in wrong, before storming out.

He later tries – and fails – to pocket some of Carla Connor’s anxiety drugs but heads home empty handed where he starts sweating and shaking.

Ryan – Ryan Prescott - is astonished when he gets home and finds Ali fitting on the floor. As the seizure continues, a terrified Ryan calls an ambulance but when Ali comes round, he’s horrified to discover that Ryan has called them.

Trying to cover his condition, Ali sends the paramedics away. He then cancels his date with Maria before revealing to Ryan that he’s addicted to diazepam.

He begs Ryan to help him, revealing that he couldn’t cope after the trauma of Cormac’s death and turned to drugs.

Ryan heads off and returns with Robert, who promises Ali he’s here to help. As Ali promises he’ll go cold turkey, Robert and Ryan tell him he’ll get through it.

Are they right?

Ali has had an issue with prescription pills in the past when he stole them from the medical centre last year after killing gangster Ronan to protect his family.

The soap has been hinting at a big story line for Ali in the coming weeks and it looks like the incident with Hope might set it off.
