A Confession – 5 reasons you can’t miss ITV’s true crime drama tonight

ITV has seen huge success with the release of new dramas and A Confession, starring Martin Freeman is another unmissable series.

Here we take you through all the reasons why you can't miss this new six-part series about serial killer Christopher Halliwell, which first hit our screens on Monday, September 2.

Five reasons to watch ITV's A Confession.

1) The gripping story based on true events

Let's just start with the story.

The events that are depicted in A Confession are based on REAL events.

When Sian O’Callaghan went missing in March 2011, CCTV evidence quickly led police to taxi driver Christopher Halliwell.

They arrested him on suspicion of kidnap, with Detective Fulcher believing Sian may still be alive — and that Halliwell was their only hope of finding her.

With this in mind, Fulcher made the decision to interrogate him not at the station, but in an isolated countryside spot without a solicitor present.

Halliwell confessed to murder and led him not just to Sian’s body, but to that of Becky Godden-Edwards, reported missing four years earlier.

2) The incredible cast

The series has an a-list star line-up.

The show is headed up by The Hobbit and Sherlock star Martin Freeman, who plays Detective Fulcher.

To add to this we have fellow movie star Imelda Staunton, who stars in the new Downton Abbey, playing Karen Edwards who daughter Becky Godden-Edwards is missing.

Next up we have drama veteran Siobhan Finneran, who plays Sian O’Callaghan's mum.

Making up the star line-up is former EastEnders star and Doc Martin actor Joe Absolom who plays murderer Christopher Halliwell.

3) The award-winning writer

The series is written by Bafta award-winning writing Jeff Pope.

He’s made a career out of turning dramatic real-life events into compelling television, writing and producing shows including Little Boy Blue, Mrs Biggs, Hatton Garden and Appropriate Adult.

Speaking to The Telegraph he said: "My career is built on factual true stories, because inevitably there is within every story originality, not cliche.

“Each of us behaves slightly differently. We all have different stories to tell.”

4) ITV does true crime well

ITV has proved themselves to be at the forefront when it comes depicting true crime for television.

This year alone they have brought us Hatton Garden and Manhunt.

The show’s director is Paul Andrew Williams, whose previous ITV work includes Broadchurch and Strangers.

5) It's on weekly

Now we all love a good binge, but there is nothing like being left on a cliffhanger and having to wait for a week until the next episode.

The series will run for six weeks and is bound to get the nation talking.

Having the show on weekly, rather than in one go on the ITV Hub, means we have longer to enjoy the gritty drama.
