ICING ON THE CAKE

Meet Bake Off 2019’s Dan Chambers – support worker from Rotherham who was eliminated in week one

DAN Chambers became the first contestant to be eliminated from the tenth series of The Great British Bake Off, having failed to impress with two challenges.

The aspiring baker had a relatively short time on the show, but what else is there to know about him?

Who is The Great British Bake Off 2019 contestant Dan?

Dan is a 32-year-old support work from Rotherham.

He is predominantly a self-taught baker, but has fond memories of his mum showing him how to bake a Victoria sponge as a child and his army chef dad coming to school to teach how to plait and bake bread.

He got serious about baking at age 21 in a bid to impress his then girlfriend (now wife) with a themed birthday cake.

Dan’s favourite part of the baking process is decoration and he loves producing awe-inspiring bakes - he even made his own wedding cake.

What happened to Dan on Bake Off ?

  • Dan's time on TGBBO was cut short when he became the first person to be eliminated in episode one after having failed to impress the judges with any of his baking recipes
  • His Signature saw him adding more fruit than he usually would to his cake - leaving it raw after the bake
  • He then came ninth in the Technical with his Angel Cakes
  • While his Showstopper dish, the Pirate Island cake, came out rather well, it wasn't enough to recover from the disastrous Signature and Technical challenges he faced beforehand

After his elimination, Dan said: “Well it wasn’t a piece of cake at all!

"I love fruit cake and it hasn’t put me off making one, but next time I won’t make it in 3 hours.

“I love the long process of making a Christmas cake and I feed it over the weeks and it always turns out a beautiful cake. I get lots of compliments from the family at Christmas!”

The Bake Off star added: “My worst moment was the Signature for me, so I knew my Showstopper had to totally wow to save me, and that was a lot of pressure.

“When I heard that the judging wasn’t amazing, I really knew I was going, so I was prepared for it when they announced it”.

"It’s absolutely crazy, really amazing, I was so adamant to get on, it’s very hard to describe the feelings, all strange and surreal.

"And then when you are in the tent it all feels normal pretty quickly."

When asked what the show is like to be on, he said: "The first time I saw the white peaks of the tent it gave me butterflies, but also you feel so excited at the same time."

What is the Great British Bake Off prize?

With all the drama, sweat and tears that the dedicated bakers go through, you would expect they would be aiming for some grand cash prize, but the answer is no.

The winning prize is just flowers and a cake stand, at least that's what has happened so far.
