GARETH Gates banned Faye Brookes from talking about their relationship to friends and wanted to manage her acting career after Corrie.
Yesterday, The Sun Online exclusively revealed the couple had split, just months after Gareth proposed to Fay, 31.
The actress has cancelled her plans to move to London to pursue her career, but doesn't know who to confide in about the split, as Gareth, 35, warned her people could sell her story for financial gain.
A source close to Faye - who played Kate Connor in the ITV soap - told The Sun Online: "Gareth convinced her people just wanted to make money out of her and not to trust them.
"Even those with the best of intentions are scared to offer advice in case it backfires".
The former couple have dated on and off for the last seven years, with Gareth proposing in January this year, just a few months after a previous split.
The insider added: "Her friends think they will reunite again in a few weeks because of how their relationship has gone before.
"If anyone bad mouths Gareth now, there's a fear the messenger will be the one that gets it in the neck."
Another source claims Gareth - who first found fame on Pop Idol in 2002 - was eager to manage Faye's career after she quit the Cobbles earlier this year.
They said: "She wanted to settle and be the home bird and have kids and so on but he won’t slow down.
"He is away all the time doing gigs on cruise ships and in resorts and when he is at home he’s property developing and working the stock and currency markets. He can’t take his foot off the pedal."
The insider added that Gareth had lots of ideas for where Faye's career should go and would push the ideas he thought were "right for her".
Gareth was accused of being "controlling", as The Sun revealed their split last year was because of his refusal to let Faye socialise with her Corrie co-stars without him, which led to constant rows.

An insider said at the time: “At certain points in their relationship Gareth was very controlling.
“He wasn’t always happy with Faye going on nights out with her friends from work without him which inevitably led to arguments between them."
After the news of their latest split was made public, Faye hinted at being "broken" and "hurt" by her ex-fiance, who she has dated on and off for seven years.
The star liked a series of posts from fans who were trying to support her after the news of her split broke yesterday.
One post read: "She fell. She crashed. She broke. She cried. She crawled. She hurt. She surrendered. And then.. she rose again."
Faye is yet to comment publicly on the split, but has been seeking comfort from fans.
She liked a post that read: "Keep smiling and remember you’re amazing. Big hugs sweetheart."
While another fan told her: "Stay strong, be positive & be happy. Know you're loved & supported always Faye. Look after yourself."
The Sun Online has contacted representatives for Faye and Gareth for comment.
