Vera series 10 is in production – here’s when the new season starts, who’s in the cast and what Brenda Blethyn has said
VERA will be reaching for her bucket hat and back to solving crime mysteries in the North East when series 10 arrives.
The highly-anticipated season will return in 2020, so fans of the ITV drama have to sit tight for now. Here is what we know about the upcoming series…
When does Vera series 10 start?
ITV have confirmed the tenth series of Vera is due for transmission in 2020, however, an exact release date is yet to be revealed.
Channel bosses confirmed the news in a statement on Monday, March 4, 2019 via the ITV Press Centre website.
At the time, executive producer, Phil Hunter said: “I’m thrilled Vera is returning for series 10. Making this show is such a joy and it's clear that Team Vera love it as much as the viewing fans love watching.
“I’m continually overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment the brilliant cast and crew bring to the show.”
Filming for season 10 began in April and award-winning actress Brenda Blethyn will reprise her role as DCI Vera Stanhope.
Series nine of the crime drama is being repeated on ITV on Sunday nights, so fans of the show can refresh their memories before the new series is launched.
What happened in Vera series 9?
Vera is the television adaption of the novels of the same name by Ann Cleeves and follows Vera, a middle-aged detective working for Northumberland and City Police.
An official synopsis for the ninth series read: "Bright and ambitious, Joanne Caswell is a newly qualified HMP forensic psychologist working in Newcastle.
“When her body is found dumped on a landfill site far from home, Vera alights on the fact that Joanne had been looking into the crime of a former patient who had recently committed suicide.
“Vera must follow the trail that Joanne has left behind to uncover who might have had a motive to kill her.”
The series nine finale is called The Seagull and is an adaption of Cleeves latest novel of the same name.
In the finale episode Vera had to ‘open up a cold case when she discovers not one but two skeletons hidden in a culvert near Whitley Bay.”
The summary for the finale read: “One of the skeletons is suspected to be a missing person, Robbie Marshall.
“And when an old acquaintance of Robbie’s is murdered in the present, Vera suspects that the two deaths must be connected.”

What has Brenda Blethyn said about Vera series 10?
Brenda said she was “delighted” to be back for another series and gushed about the support the show has gotten.
She enthused: “Along with the rest of the cast of VERA, I’m delighted to be embarking on series ten.
“The enthusiasm and warmth shown to VERA has been overwhelming and we can’t wait to get started. Newcastle here we come!”

Kenny Doughty as Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy
Kenny Doughty is an English actor and director.
Born on March 27, 1975, the Barnsley, South Yorkshire native is 44 years old.
He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
He is married to fellow actress Caroline Carver who is known for her parts in The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns (1999), The Aryan Couple (2004), and My First Wedding (2006).
Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart
Jon is a Scottish actor with a vast career spanning across film, telly and theatre.
He's had parts in The Bill, Bergerac, Taggart and Vera.
The actor is best known for starring in Peter McDougall's plays alongside Billy Connolly.
Jon has played DC Kenny Lockhart since the show started in 2011.
Riley Jones plays DC Mark Edwards
As well as playing DC Mark Edwards in Vera, the actor has starred in Run and Wolfblood.
Ibinabo Jack as DC Jacqueline Williams
Ibainabo plays DC Jacqueline Williams.
Besides acting in Vera, she's also starred in Two For Joy and Hollyoaks.
Paul Kaye as Pathologist Dr. Malcolm Donahue.
Paul Kaye was born December 15, 1964 and is an English comedian and actor.
He is best known for playing Dennis Pennis, a shock celebrity interviewer.
More recently he has taken on serious roles, and has become an established actor.
