The Only Way Is Essex ‘strike’ over £100-a-day pay — and end up getting a bumper rise
STARS of The Only Way Is Essex threatened to strike over their £100-a-day pay — and got a rise within a few hours..
We can reveal the biggest names of Towie were so angry about being paid just £100 per a day that more than half boycotted ITV’s summer party, some even tearing up their invites to make their point.
Panicked bosses then bumped up their wages within just 24 hours to prevent any delay to scheduled filming.
One cast member, who was invited to the ITV bash but refused to go, told The Sun they were fed up with being paid a pittance compared to other stars on the channel.
The star said: “We gave Towie bosses an ultimatum — pay us or we won’t work. We all refused as a group to go to the ITV summer party.
“We said we won’t turn up for work and to show just how serious we were we didn’t turn to the recent ITV do. But they gave in the following day and a lot of us have had a pay increase.”
Cast members will now be put into four pay bands based on their popularity.
Reality veterans Bobby Norris, 32, James ‘Diags’ Bennewith, 28, Georgia Kousoulou, 28, and Chloe Sims, 36, are in the top tier, which means they now command £450 an episode.
Others are paid £350, £250 or £90 if they are a newcomer trying to prove their worth.
Stars are expected to return to filming next month in Bali. The ITVBe show has been on since 2010 and running for 24 series.
When the show first started they were paid just £50, eventually getting bumped up to £80 and then £100.
However stars have made their money outside the show with Gemma Collins, 38, Tommy Mallet, 27, and Amy Childs, 29, all becoming millionaires.
A source on the show confirmed pay increases had been given, saying: “Many of the cast were due to have their contracts renewed and so this tied in to the increases.”
A Towie spokeswoman said: “”We would not discuss individual salaries, however it is untrue to suggest that cast boycotted the ITV Summer party – several current cast members including Pete Wicks, Chloe and Demi Sims were in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the event”
