Top Gun 2 trailer sees Tom Cruise return as Maverick in long-awaited sequel 34 years after the original
TOM Cruise surprised fans yesterday by debuting the trailer for the long-awaited Top Gun sequel at an appearance at at San Diego Comic Con.
The star roars back into action as cocky pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the teaser for the film, which is set to be released 34 years after the original.
The actor was met with cheers when he revealed the exhilarating trailer, and reminisced about filming the original Top Gun in 1986, which catapulted him to global superstardom.
Cruise, 57, said: "I was always asked 'When are you going to do another one?'
“Well, you've been very patient with me. I felt like it was my responsibility to really deliver for you."
In the new film, Maverick is a flight instructor at the Top Gun school and guides the son of Goose - from the original - to be the pilot his father was.
The trailer sees Ed Harris's character, a high-ranking military official, telling Cruise's pilot he is a "dinosaur" in the modern world of aviation.
It opens with a dramatic shot of what appears to be a desert, with mountains in the background.
"Thirty-plus years of service. Combat medals. Citations," a voice says, over footage of Maverick flying a plane.
"Only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years. Yet, you can't get a promotion, you won't retire and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die."
The shot then reveals Ed Harris' character speaking to Maverick, asking why he isn't "at least a two-star admiral by now."
"It's one of life's mysteries, sir," Cruise responds.
The camera then cuts to nostalgia-inducing shots of Maverick donning his famous leather jacket and a pair of aviators.
A montage of various scenes and characters from the film play over triumphant music before returning to the shot of Harris and Cruise.
"The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction," said Harris. Cruise responds "maybe so, sir. But not today."
Cruise posted the trailer, which now has six million views, on Twitter, saying: "Maverick is back. #TopGun."
He revealed all the flying in the trailer is real and that Top Gun: Maverick is a love letter to aviation.
They worked with the Navy for the film, which is currently in production.
Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Miles Teller as Goose's son.
The 1986 film follows Maverick as he navigates elite fighter pilot training, becoming friends with Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) and trying to romance his instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).
Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the sequel, which also stars Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell.
Top Gun: Maverick is set to be released in June 2020.
