BAKE Off's Nadiya Hussain has revealed that she eats tinned potatoes to save cash as she defended using them in her new cook book.

The chef faced outrage from fans when she suggested using tinned products, but she has insisted that it is actually a huge money saver.

Speaking during an appearance on , the 34-year-old star explained: "I've always used canned veg, and I had a feeling [that the backlash] would happen but I waited it out.

"There was a big thing about canned potatoes, and there's nothing wrong with them, there's nothing wrong with eating them."

Explaining how she got into the tinned food lifestyle, Nadiya continued: "Seven or eight years ago there was a moment in my life where I really wanted to eat potatoes, I could live on potatoes.

"I had to choose between if I wanted to rack up the gas bill and boil potatoes... It was cheaper for me to just go out and get them.

"And that was my first experience, about eight years ago and I haven't looked back since."

She continued: "We are are becoming slightly pretentious with the way we eat, we are told constantly we should eat this or we shouldn't eat that but I eat whatever I want - who cares?"

Chris likened the furore to when Delia Smith suggested people used frozen mashed potato in their recipes to save time back in 2009.

Nadiya concluded: "I use tinned potatoes if I need to add potatoes to something, just to save time."

The star shot to fame when she won The Great British Bake Off back in 2015, carving a lucrative career for herself through other foodie TV shows and her popular cookery books.

She has also bravely spoken out about her mental health battle, speaking candidly about her anxiety and panic disorder over the years.
