Stuber review: An awful excuse for a comedy— I suffered for 93 minutes so you don’t have to
STUBER (named so because Stu, the lead character is an Uber driver – I know) intends on being a good ol’ fashioned nineties buddy movie in a similar being to Bird on a Wire or 48hrs, but fails miserably and instead ends up being about as funny as giving a paper cut a vinegar bath – for 48hrs.
The whole film relies on two pitifully executed running jokes.
One is that, as I’ve mentioned already, Stu is an Uber driver (cue plenty of references to surcharging and star ratings lol), and that Vic, a deranged policeman with daughter issues, is recovering from eye surgery and can’t see very well.
They get mixed up in some corruption led crime caper which you, and anyone over the age of one, will solve within 5 minutes. Think Mr. Magoo starring in Perfect Strangers but with all the jokes removed.
It’s a waste of a good cast. Dave Batista’s expert timing, teased out of him so well as Drax is nowhere to be found.
We should perhaps allow him a little leeway given he’s still finding his feet as an actor (it has taken The Rock 18 years to become Dwayne Johnson, the world’s biggest action star, after all) but not Kumail Manjani – writer and star of ‘The Big Sick’ one of the best comedies of the past few years.
An awful excuse for a comedy, which when placed alongside films like Booksmart or Eighth grade, feels like just one big-ass waste of everybody’s time.
I’ve suffered this crap so you don’t have to.
My pleasure.
