Home And Away is ‘facing the axe’ after 31 years on TV
HOME And Away is said to be facing the axe after 31 years on TV.
The Aussie soap has been a big hit Down Under and in the UK since it began in 1988.
The show currently airs on Channel Seven in Australia and Channel 5 here in the UK, but sources claim bosses at the Australian network are "under pressure" after falling ratings.
Home And Away's slot in the TV schedules Down Under - 7pm every Monday to Thursday - has been blamed by industry insiders as well as the rise in reality TV.
Australia now has its own versions of Love Island as well as Married At First Sight - and they're more popular than the Summer Bay soap.
During its 31 years on air, Home And Away has created iconic characters such as Alf Stewart and Sally Fletcher.
It has also given a number of Aussie actors their start in the industry, including Thor hunk Chris Hemsworth, Isla Fisher, Melissa George and even the late Heath Ledger.
But TV Blackbox reported that on Monday this week, the network lost 454,000 people after Seven News - which airs just before Home And Away - ended and the soap began.
While the news drew 1.115 million viewers at 6.30pm, that number plummeted to 661,000 as the opening titles for Home And Away started.
