George Michael’s family will keep grave unmarked so fans don’t make it a shrine
GEORGE Michael’s family will keep his grave unmarked so fans do not turn it into a shrine.
The singer was buried next to his mum in a secret unmarked plot two years ago. Fans had demanded a gravestone to honour the superstar.
But it has emerged George’s dad Kyriacos and sisters Yioda and Melanie have no plans to mark the site because they want to keep mourning privately.
A source at the cemetery said: “The family has requested that nothing be placed on the grave — no stone, no cross — so that fans don’t know where to find it.
“They feel that if was marked it would become a morbid tourist attraction for them. A lot of people feel that he deserves better, but we have to respect the family’s wishes.”
George died of heart failure on Christmas Day 2016 aged 53.
He was buried in a private ceremony in Highgate Cemetery, North London, in March 2017.
It is located 200ft from his former mansion.
Family do not want George’s plot to be disturbed during organised tours of Highgate Cemetery, which take punters to famous resting places for £12. They visit graves including those of communist Karl Marx and Hitchhiker’s Guide author Douglas Adams.
