A devastating epilogue revealed more about the lasting effects of Chernobyl, and the ultimate fates of the show’s characters.

The explosion and fire at the Chernobyl power plant on 26 April, 1986 — the world’s worst nuclear accident — was caused by human error.

According to the official Soviet recording, it puts the death toll figure at 31, however, the real amount is thought to be in the thousands, if not millions.

In the aftermath, 28 firemen died who tackled the blaze at the power plant in Pripyat as a result of Acute Radiation Syndrome.
