Virgin Radio Breakfast Show host Chris Evans knocks on doors and asks to borrow phones after binning his mobile
CHRIS Evans has a novel solution for calling his wife after ditching his mobile phone for good – knocking on people’s doors and asking to use theirs.
The 53-year-old DJ told his Virgin Radio breakfast show listeners how he took a tip from the neighbourly old days when he needed to call his wife Natasha yesterday.
Callers had been puzzled when he said his wife had been texting him on sidekick Vassos Alexander's mobile, explaining he doesn't have one.
He insisted: "I'm very happy without my phone. People say: 'Yeah well you're always using other people's phones.'
"But I'm sure you have other people's phones you can use too if you give it up.
"Here's what I had to do yesterday because I was in on my own. I couldn't use his phone so I had to walk down the street.
"You know in the olden days you used to knock on someone's door and borrow a cup of sugar or whatever?
"I had to go two doors down because I knew they were in and go: 'Hi, excuse me, could I please borrow your phone please?"
He said they replied: "Oh yes you don't have a phone, do you? Course you can, there you go."
Chris followed a string of stars including Simon Cowell, Robbie Williams and Elton John in chucking away his mobile.

He told listeners on the very first day of the new show in January: "I no longer have a phone... I don’t have one.
"It’s not in my glove compartment in my car, it’s not locked away, I don’t have zero screen hours, then allow myself on later.
"I don’t have a phone any more.”
The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky is on Virgin Radio on weekdays from 6.30am
