JAMIE EAST AT THE MOVIES

High Life is a brutal watch but the violence serves the story

The story follows Robert Pattinson who raises a baby girl aboard a space ship with no one else around to help

A MAN is raising a baby girl aboard a space ship with no-one else around to help.

A novel concept which does nothing to change my opinion that both Pattinson and his old Twilight partner in crime Kristen Stewart are living their best lives, using the platform and wealth afforded them by the popcorn trilogy to push themselves and choose project that genuinely excite them.

Pattinson plays Monte, who along with his baby daughter are the only survivors on a oneway mission to harness energy from a black hole

It helps that both are also incredibly talented. The rest of the cast in ‘High Life’ aren’t too shabby either.  Co-starring Juliet Binoche, Outkast’s Andre Benjamin and Mia Goth - director Claire Denis treads the line between Arthouse and low budget sci-fi very well.  This is an original, shocking and eminently watchable film.

Pattinson plays Monte, who along with his baby daughter are the only survivors on a oneway mission to harness energy from a black hole. both he and his fellow passengers were all death-row inmates, sent on the mission due to their expendability - they are subject to a bizarre string of experiments, which reduce the whole ship to the most basic and primal of behaviours.

We spend a lot of the film piecing the plot together through flashbacks and teases, which I really enjoy.

We see bodies in cold storage, but don’t know how they wound up there - did Monte kill them? Enjoy playing dot to dot and trying to figure out why this all went horribly wrong.

It is at times a brutal watch, with scenes of extreme sexual violence that do not hold back in the slightest - but in a rarity for modern cinema, are only there to serve the story.
