What happens to money and property in a divorce?

A couple can work out how to split their money and property without going to court.

If you are unable to agree, a judge will decide how to split the assets depending on how long you have been married.

They will also take into account the following:

  • ages
  • ability to earn
  • property and money
  • living expenses
  • standard of living
  • role in the marriage or civil partnership, for example if you were the breadwinner or primary carer
