Richard Madeley blames his fake tan fail on confusing wife Judy’s lotion for aftershave – but GMB viewers aren’t buying it
The host tried to explain the bright orange glow he sported on last week's show
GOOD Morning viewers watched as Richard Madeley confessed that his fake tan fail on last week's show was due to a mix-up - but they weren't having it.
The 62-year-old presenter trended on Twitter last week after he appeared on screen with a deep orange glow and was forced to apologise for his "pumpkin-like" tan after a guest asked if he'd been to Barbados.
But this morning Richard explained that he had mistaken his aftershave balm for daughter Chloe's or wife Judy's fake tanning lotion.
He began: "I get ready in the kitchen and because I’ve been told off for having stubble, I had a dry shave in the kitchen, I had about five minutes to spare and because I had a tan it was quite itchy.
"Running short of time I reached into the cupboard and I got what I thought was aftershave balm, which I haven’t used for ages, and squirted it on.
"I put it on and I thought it smelt a bit funny and as I was driving in I thought ‘I smell a bit woody, but whatever it’s probably past its sell by’."
Richard then went on to confess that he'd realised his mistake when he got home and checked the product that he'd applied earlier in the day.
He revealed: "Anyway, when I got home on Wednesday and saw what I looked like I went to the cupboard and it wasn’t aftershave balm it was Chloe’s or Judy’s fake tan and I can only apologise."
Although, it seems that not everyone bought Richard's excuse, as many took to Twitter to point out that his tan was applied too well to be an innocent mistake.
One eagle eyed fan said: "We are not that stupid Richard Madeley. Your fake tan was applied properly and covered all exposed skin areas. It wasn’t just “splashed on from a mistaken bottle of aftershave”. Total nonsense."
While another commented: "Richard madeley says he accidentally applied fake tan instead of aftershave in the morning, explaining his tan look on Wednesday . If this was so the palms of his hands would be stained but are completely white and the backs are also tanned. Not true mate, Try again."
And another said: "First 5 mins spent on Madley explaining his tan was a result of mistaking tanning lotion for after shave - yer right!"
Meanwhile, the presenter also stunned viewers when he revealed he likes to go commando.
Richard made the candid revelation during a segment that claimed 80 per cent of men keep their underwear for 10 years.
When asked about his decision to ditch pants, he said: "No. I have been [commando] forever. I can't remember the last time I wore pants."
Co-host Charlotte Hawkins asked: "Are you not worried you might split your trousers when you're out and about?"
But his stark words seemed too much for viewers, with one writing: "Richard madeley goes commando - FAR TOO MUCH INFO FOR 6.09."
Another posted: ""First Madeley calls Kate babe then he swears then he admits to not wearing underwear.. So does he have his suit cleaned every day? Surely that's why people wear underwear.. Yuck... Sorry i tried for 10 minutes and it's just unbearable.. Off back to Sky news again!"
A third shared: "Richard Madeley going commando.....WTF?"
A fourth wrote: ""@GMB are your presenters high this morning??? Richard Madeley fake tan and going commando... there’s something I never want to think about... ever..."
"The last thing I want on a Monday is to find out Richard Madely goes commando#gmb time to switch off," said another.
