ROSE-LYNN Harlan (Jessie Buckley) is a Scottish woman, fresh out of prison, with the ambition of becoming a country music singer.
But she has two children to look after.
A new job as a cleaner for a wealthy middle-class family gets Rose-Lynn closer to her dream, but to the detriment of her relationship with her kids and mother (Julie Walters).
Buckley is a tour-de-force as this working-class hero that, for all her flaws, has the ability to charm every time she opens her mouth.
Her singing voice – and that is her actual singing voice – is stunning and thankfully we hear it on several occasions throughout the film.
Each time, these moments offer a reprieve of sorts from the emotional scenes where she is breaking promises to her kids and clashing with her long-suffering mother.
Walters, of course, is fiercely wonderful. She is the linchpin that keeps the film grounded in reality and her mother-daughter pairing with Buckley is perfection.
A heart-wrenching ride you won’t want to get off, Wild Rose will leave you a Jessie Buckley and country fan.
