While fans at home were stunned by the attack, the punch's 'over the top' sound effect took away from the moment
EASTENDERS viewers were left horrified tonight when schoolboy Denny punched his mum, Sharon Mitchell, in the face - but some fans were distracted by the "comical" sound effect.
Earlier this week, Sharon attacked drug dealer Stix when she learned that her son was planning to run away with them after they groomed him to carry out illegal tasks.
Denny is furious with his mum for interfering, and lashed out at her when she questioned why he had even wanted to run away in this evening's episode of the BBC One soap.
Shouting at Sharon, the schoolboy raged: "The only time you care about me is when it suits you.
"I was bullied, i was beaten, I even needed stitches, and where did you go? Australia, the other side of the world.
"At least they are there for me, they care about me, they're my mates.
";I hate you, they were right about you. You are just a total s**t."
As he stormed up the stairs, Sharon hit back: "I am your mother!"
Fans were then stunned when Denny retaliated by hitting her.
One shocked viewer tweeted: "This show hasn't left me shocked like this in a while, as if that's just happened."
Another added: "My jaw is aching it dropped that fast."
Others couldn't help but laugh at the fake sound effect that had been added to the punch - with some even comparing it to a comic book.
One shared: "Dennis!!!! Wtf??? Apart from the awful sound effects that was shocking."
A second laughed: "and the BAFTA for the funniest, most OTT sound effect goes to..."
On Tuesday night, fans praised Sharon for putting Stix in his place - although others feared for her safety after the villain warned that she would live to regret hitting him.
Dedicated viewers have speculated that Sharon might be forced to flee Albert Square after making an enemy of the gang.
One tweeted: "Oh no! Sharon needs to leave the square now. They’ll be back for her and anybody else."
Another wrote: "In real life, Sharon would be lying on the floor with a knife in her."
And with Denny already turning on his mum, it looks as though they might be right.
