HOLLYOAKS viewers were devastated tonight as Sinead O'Connor was convinced to forgive her rapist husband Laurie.
Manipulative Laurie's gaslighting appeared to have the desired effect as tearful Sinead committed to giving their marriage another go.
She hesitantly moved in and gave him a kiss at the end of tonight's episode after he made her dinner.
Viewers were devastated Sinead didn't walk away.
One wrote on Twitter: "OMG that kiss. You can tell how uncomfortable Sinead was, that’s what makes this storyline so sad and heartbreaking 😭💔😢 #Hollyoaks."
Another posted: "Feel so sad watching Sinead struggle with what Laurie did 😔and put the blame on her @Stephdavis77 @Hollyoaks."
A third wrote: "#Hollyoaks oh Sinead he's truly got in your head 😭 💔."
Another said: "Laurie has Sinead exactly where he wants her. She’s not that stupid but has become blind to his mind games. #Hollyoaks."
Prior to the kiss Sinead, told Laurie: "I hate what you have done to me. But I still love you, and I want our family, so I'll do whatever I have to to make this work."
The pair had an emotional talk over a pie dinner, which left Sinead distinctly unimpressed.
She vented: "It's going to take a lot more to fix this than a bit of puff pastry."
"Tell me. I'll do whatever it takes. You and Hannah are my everything," replied Laurie.
However, he snapped when Sinead told him he'd raped her.
He fumed: "You can't keep saying that making out like I'm such a sick pervert. You're my wife."
Their showdown came after Sinead's mum Diane urged her to give Laurie another chance during a heart to heart outside the hospital, unaware that he had abused her daughter.
The words played heavily on Sinead's mind and appeared to influence her decision.
Last night viewers praised Stephanie Davis for her harrowing portrayal of the rape victim.
The 26-year-old actress returned to the Channel 4 soap last year and showed off her acting prowess in her latest storyline.
Her character Sinead was raped by twisted husband Laurie Shelby during Monday's first look episode.
Last night, a shell-shocked and tearful Sinead confronted her husband about what he did to her the night before.
Laurie tried to say it was just a continuation of their argument, but Sinead replied: "It takes two people to argue, but one person to rape."
Later that morning, Sinead told her husband she was reporting him to the police and that he would pay for what he did.
But her spouse then brought up her prostitute past and said they'd never believe her over him, and somehow convinced her he didn't rape her.
He then turned on the waterworks for extra effect and sobbed to Sinead he wanted to fight for her and her daughter Lily by adopting her, despite what he claimed Sinead had done to him.
During the episode, Sinead went through a range of emotions from anger to heartbreak, shock to compliance, and viewers were full of praise for Stephanie's portrayal.
Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "Gosh @Stephdavis77 is all kinds of brilliant isn’t she #Hollyoaks."
Another added: "#Hollyoaks on first look is breaking me, how amazing is @Stephdavis77?!!!!!"
A third agreed, writing: "@Stephdavis77 is just absolutely incredible!!! Blows me away every time I'm so proud I'm in tears, what a beautiful actress #Hollyoaks."
Meanwhile a fourth was equally touched by Stephanie's acting, tweeting: "What incredible acting by @Stephdavis77 tonight, genuine tears in my eyes watching this storyline unfold. This is why she is the best actress on #Hollyoaks @Hollyoaks."
