ZAC Efron transforms into serial killer Ted Bundy in the new trailer for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile.

Sky Cinema's biographical drama is based on the memoirs of Bundy's former girlfriend and explores her relationship with one of the most notorious murderers in US criminal history.

He confessed to 30 killings and was executed by electric chair in Florida in 1989.

Efron, 31, appeared in the film's trailer released on Tuesday, starring opposite Lily Collins as Elizabeth Kloepfer, the girlfriend desperately trying to learn the truth about her murderous boyfriend.

At one point in the teaser, Kloepfer asks: "Ted, did you do it?" A stony-faced Efron replies: "No."

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile, also stars Jim Parsons, John Malkovich and Kaya Scodelario.

The movie earned positive reviews following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, with Efron's performance winning critical acclaim.
It is a world away from his breakout role in Disney's 2006 TV movie High School Musical, in which he played teenage singer Troy Bolton.

Viewers of the trailer were blown away by Efron's performance as the killer with one writing: "When I heard about this casting choice I had serious doubts...just wasn't having it...but this trailer changed that. I can see it now. I think he's gonna nail it."

Another added: "I have been waiting for this movie for more than 3 years and a year ago once I found out that Zac is going to portray Bundy I got extremely disappointed, but watching this trailer now I get chills. Truly impressive."

Bundy was a law student who was considered handsome and charismatic by his peers, traits he used to snare his victims.

He met Kloepfer in 1969 in Washington.

Bundy decapitated at least 12 of his victims and kept some of their heads as mementos of his vile acts.

In 1975, the maniac was arrested for kidnapping Carol DaRonch, one of the few who survived his attacks, and sentenced to up to 15 years behind bars.

Two years later, while acting as his own lawyer after being indicted over the death of a Colorado woman, Bundy jumped out of the jailhouse library window and disappeared.

He was known to revisit some of his crime scenes to sexually violate the corpses of his victims.

He was caught eight days later but in December the same year, 1977, he climbed out of a hole in the ceiling of his cell and fled to Florida.

In January 1978, he broke into the Chi Omega sorority at Florida State University, killing two women and bludgeoning three others.

He was convicted of those crimes in July 1979 after bite marks on one of the bodies were found to be his.

His final victim was a 12-year-old girl in Florida.

A documentary was made about his evil killings by Netflix called Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile is directed by Joe Berlinger and will be released in UK cinemas and on Sky Cinema from May 3.
