The latest online jibe fuels their current social media slamming match after the GMB presenter said he was deeply offended over the insults aimed at him by the campaigner, who took issue with his attacks on gender fluidity earlier this week.

He had attacked Sam Smith for coming out as non-binary in an interview and mocked him for it on the ITV morning show.

Piers said: "Sam Smith has announced he’s genderfluid… he can’t work out if he’s male or female, whatever. He’s now identifying as [non-binary].

Piers, triggered by the tweet that didn't tag him or feature his name, quoted it and said: "Appalling that you just assume I am identifying as male tonight."

He tweeted: "Don't call me 'hun'. I identify as male, but 'hun' normally applies to a female ('honey') which means you are mockingly mis-gendering me & that's now apparently a criminal offence in Britain. Unless you meant 'hun' as a derogatory term for Germans in which case you’re a racist."

He then complained about her "disgusting foul-mouthed" abuse to a magazine for covering his comments.
